Pain Spreads Through an Ecosystem of Companies

Suzanne Vranica writes in today’s Wall Street Journal about how GM is an economic ecosystem and how fallout from it’s bankruptcy will effect many, many companies and industries.

“The fallout could be catastrophic for many businesses,” says John W. Henke Jr., president of Planning Perspectives Inc., a research firm in Birmingham, Mich. “GM is so integrated into our society — from IT professions, advertising agencies, media companies and even those who provide janitorial services to GM.”

Survey says: Auto suppliers like working with Honda best

Rick Haglund’s blog on mlive.com discusses how Honda has now overtaken the top spot in supplier relations over Toyota.  It also discusses how important supplier relations are going to be for Chrysler during this period of bankruptcy:

“If Chrysler doesn’t change its ways, it is going to be in big trouble, regardless of how it comes out of bankruptcy. Chrysler needs its suppliers more than ever; it cannot survive without them. Right now, Chrysler’s suppliers are not doing anything to support the company because of the treatment they’ve been getting for the past two years. With its relatively new VP of Purchasing in place and as the bankruptcy settles down Chrysler will hopefully return to improving the way it works with its suppliers as it was doing in 2004 – 2006.” – Dr. John Henke

SRM in turbulent times

treeRecently, Dr. Henke wrote an article that was published in CPO Agenda about developing stronger supplier relations in an economic downturn.  He has been studying the correlation between profit and positive supplier relations, and writes that taking the time to build better relations now will bear profitable fruit in the future.

You can read the article in CPO Agenda online here.

We also have an alternative version of the article that is slightly longer available in PDF format here.

Article can also be found in the paper version in the Spring 2009 edition of CPO Agenda.

This article, entitled “No bailout for Visteon, Ford execs say,” appeared in the January 30th, 2009, edition of The Detroit News.  As the title states, the article is about Ford’s announcement that it would not provide financial backing to Visteon if the company were to fail.  Visteon was originally Ford’s components operations department, until it became a standalone company supplying auto parts to Ford in 2000.  The newspaper asked Dr. Henke his opinion on the situation:

Ford gave the proper public response but remains reliant on Visteon for parts and would have to help in some way if the automaker feared disruption of its flow of parts.
