Car suppliers to get cut of savings at GM

Today on Supply Management there is a short article about GM’s new plan to share savings with their suppliers by Allie Anderson.  Dr. Henke is quoted in the article as saying:

“In most industries, all cost-savings revert back to the customer. With the bankruptcy behind them, I think there is a recognition within GM that they can start afresh.”

Andersson improved GM-supplier relations, expert says

Pain Spreads Through an Ecosystem of Companies

Suzanne Vranica writes in today’s Wall Street Journal about how GM is an economic ecosystem and how fallout from it’s bankruptcy will effect many, many companies and industries.

“The fallout could be catastrophic for many businesses,” says John W. Henke Jr., president of Planning Perspectives Inc., a research firm in Birmingham, Mich. “GM is so integrated into our society — from IT professions, advertising agencies, media companies and even those who provide janitorial services to GM.”

Annual Automotive OEM – Tier 1 Supplier Working Relations Study 2009

Now in its 9th year, the annual study determines the supplier working conditions in numerous areas at the North American domestic OEMs (GM, Ford and Chrysler) and the foreign domestic OEMs (Toyota, Honda and Nissan). This year, 231 Tier 1 suppliers – representing 52% of the OEMs’ annual buy – responded to the survey. Demographically, the supplier-respondents represent 28 of the Top 50 North American suppliers, 43 of the Top 100 and 58 of the Top 150 North American suppliers. The study culminates in the Working Relations Index (WRI) which is a quantitative ranking by suppliers of their working relations with each of the six OEMs.

The Ripple Effect of a Potential GM Bankruptcy

In November, Planning Perspectives performed a pulse survey regarding the proposed federal government bailout of GM.  PPI asked 270 executives of 185 different supplier companies their opinion on the matter (GM Bailout Survey).

Time.com wrote an article about how the collapse of GM would have much more far reaching consequences than it would seem on the surface.  The responses from the suppliers in the survey was used as a cornerstone of the story.

GM Bailout Survey

gmPlanning Perspectives recently performed a pulse survey regarding the proposed federal government bailout of GM.  PPI asked 270 executives of 185 different supplier companies their opinion on the matter.  76% of the automotive supplier executives surveyed support a bailout of GM.
